Duplicate File Remover - FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • 1. Miscellaneous Questions
Q: I've tried the program for finding duplicate images and it works fine. I'd like to buy the software but have one query -- I have to keep pressing the continue box when moving all the duplicates to a separate location. Is this still a problem if I purchase the program?
Q: Is it safe to delete all the duplicate files that have been found and have a check mark to them?
Q: I have a folder with over 100 duplicate files in it and the only difference is the name, e.g. dsc100.jpg, dsc100.1.jpg, dsc100.2.jpg. How can I make this program see them as duplicates?
Q: Is there a way to make the program look for files with the same name but different file size?
Q: When I do a scan, I get this up on the screen: "Skipped files (those treated as excluded or not having read access)". What does this mean?
Q: How do I use Duplicate File Remover to remove duplicate emails in Outlook? I wanted to import a single email from Outlook Express to Outlook but it has imported everything.
Q: Is there a limit to the number of files that can be scanned in a single operation using Duplicate File Remover?
Q: Tried to run Duplicate File Remover and get stalled at Step 3 of 4. After 3.5 hours the progress bar has not moved. This is totally repeatable no matter what options or search areas I select.

Q: I've tried the program for finding duplicate images and it works fine. I'd like to buy the software but have one query -- I have to keep pressing the continue box when moving all the duplicates to a separate location. Is this still a problem if I purchase the program?
A: This is a limitation of the trial version. If you purchase the program, it will go away.

Q: Is it safe to delete all the duplicate files that have been found and have a check mark to them?
A: Yes, it is, you will still have one copy left, but it would also seem a good idea to go over the list first and choose the folders where you want to keep those remaining copies. Also, if you haven't changed the default settings, the deleted duplicates will go to the Recycle Bin.

Q: I have a folder with over 100 duplicate files in it and the only difference is the name, e.g. dsc100.jpg, dsc100.1.jpg, dsc100.2.jpg. How can I make this program see them as duplicates?
A: Start the program, click Next, choose Pictures and Photos, click Next, specify the folder, click Next, clear the "Identical names" box (leave only "Identical content" checked). This should do it, assuming the folder is not among those excluded and no additional parameters complicate things (Advanced search options at Step 2).

Q: Is there a way to make the program look for files with the same name but different file size?
A: Yes, you can do that by leaving just the uppermost box checked at Step 2.

Q: When I do a scan, I get this up on the screen: "Skipped files (those treated as excluded or not having read access)". What does this mean?
A: It means some files are left alone during a scan -- either because they are in Excluded Folders (press Advanced Search Options at Step 2 to review those) or they are prevented by another application or the operating system from being accessed.

Q: How do I use Duplicate File Remover to remove duplicate emails in Outlook? I wanted to import a single email from Outlook Express to Outlook but it has imported everything.
A: Duplicate File Remover cannot do that because it can only work with files while MS Outlook emails are actually database records (although, individually, they can be converted to files).

Q: Is there a limit to the number of files that can be scanned in a single operation using Duplicate File Remover?
A: Technically, there is a limit, of course -- 2,147,483,648 files.

Q: Tried to run Duplicate File Remover and get stalled at Step 3 of 4. After 3.5 hours the progress bar has not moved. This is totally repeatable no matter what options or search areas I select.
A: We suggest that you check the disk in question for errors: right-click on it in Windows Explorer and select Properties -> Tools -> Check now... -> Start.
